Glen Callater trio

Fri 18th Sept

Starting from Auchallater, biked in just over 4k, then jogged up to Creag Phadruig, disturbing a herd of red deer. Back down and biked to upper side of Loch Callater. Jog/walk up Jock’s Road / grass track in upper section and then turned south to Tolmount. Good view of head of Glen Doll and surrounding tops. Back down Jock’s road and then crossed over to head up to Loch Kander. Wonderful surprise when you eventually get up over the last section and the Loch is all there hidden in a bowl surrounded by steep sides. More red deer surprised. Looks like Francie should try out Invercauld for stags…..

A watery view – Creag Phadruig

Parked at Auchallater and in along the track to the bridge. Immediately over bridge (about 20m into the heather on left) there is a faint track heading up to old grouse butts and giving you a good start on the climb.
After this it is a mix of short/long/burnt heather to the top.
Once there, you get a view one way over Loch Phadruig towards Ballochbuie. Looking the other way is Loch Callater.
It’s a great viewpoint.

The “inky” Lochain

Weather not as good as forecast but was keen to continue checking out crags for next winter and will never forget the gale force winds that forced retreat when skiing to the Tolmount. Once again the winds were blowing but this time cycled up to Loch Callater, which I found really easy so maybe gaining some fitness!

Once off the bike under foot conditions were wet and little sign of other visitors and no sign of crag or the loch, but pressed on and than a corner was turned and there it was…the Lochan which was in deed “inky2, a similar colour that comes from the ink cap mushrooms.

Jog down to the bike and along the west side of Loch Callater. Now I know why I had gone up hill with such ease, and was not fitness, the wind was strong and coming from due west forcing constant peddling to get the bike down the hill. Stopped at the Lodge and jogged gently up past the grouse butts to Creag Phadruig and the Loch.

Rain started as I got back to the bike and returned to van.
